2009 travel industry affiliate marketing predictions

My predictions to what will happen in the affiliate marketing for the travel industry in 2009 are below.

Have a go yourself… Please use the comments section below to let me know what you could, should or won’t happen in 2009.
  • Strong growth in number of new entrants to affiliate marketing for flights, holidays etc. Not from the exisiting affiliate marketing community, more from the thousands of travel industry staff that will be made redudant as the credit crunch bites hard in early 2009. These new entrants have the potential to do very well thanks to their vast destination and product and sales knowledge at a time when niche content is so important for results in search engines.
  • Consolidation by TUI Travel PLC (i.e all the tour operators and travel agencies from First Choice group and TUI UK) – to move all their UK programmes to one affiliate network. Thomas Cook / MyTravel are doing this now, TUI will probably wait until after the peak booking season is over.
  • Reasonable stability / growth in the use of affiliate programmes by the travel industry due to the attraction that they are only paying for results compared with expensive and hard to measure campaigns in newspapers / TV etc.
  • Travel companies that don’t work with cashback sites or give out voucher codes to see better results from affiliates as the affiliate community switch their attention / loyalty to schemes that have less leakage to these enemies of the hard working affiliate.
  • Bullet points to remain popular throughout this blog.

I think although you will see stability/growth in the use of affiliate programs, I believe you will see reduced commission. We have seen it quite alot this year already.
